James Longstreet [1821 1904] was a prominent Confederate general during the American Civil War and principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee who called him his ''Old War Horse''. He served under Lee as a corps commander for most of the battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theatre, and also with General Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater. General Longstreet began his military career in 1842 in the United States Army until the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861.
